Brain Crowned the Winner as Penguins win cup!

Following a thrilling game 7 victory, the Pittsburgh Penguins have won the 2009 Stanley Cup! Perhaps more importantly, Brain has won the 1st ever "Drummer John's NHL Playoff Pool"! Had it not been for a complete collapse from Shane, it may have been a tighter finish, but Brain managed to pull off a convincing win with a 25 point cushion on 2nd place. Rajwinda and Buck made it interesting bringing in a Stanley Cup round best 85 points each after both predicting a Penguins game 7 win, along with each winning one of the bonuses. Rajwinda predicted 28 goals scored and had the closest prediction to 31 without going over. Buck was the only one to predict Malkin to win the Conn Smyth trophy as playoff MVP. Yours truly managed to win the game 7 bonus with a prediction of 10, and Maxim Talbot's game winning goal coming at 10:07 of the 2nd period. I rule.

Thanks to everyone for participating in this 2009 NHL playoffs pool, it made following hockey without my beloved Oilers still interesting and worth watching. I plan on doing something a little more advanced for the regular season, perhaps picking fantasy teams or maybe even more of an NFL style game(s) of the week system. I will think about it and find something that I can manage without spending my life doing it, and that is not to much of a commitment for the participants involved. Game 7 - Stanley Cup Final

Oh yeah! What better way to end the playoffs and crown this years Stanley Cup Champions than with a game 7! So here we go:

Choose 1 number between 0-20, this number will represent the minute on the score clock that the game winning goal is scored at. You don't need to choose a period, only a minute. Your minute will count in the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and all overtime periods. For example, if I were to pick "19" and the game winning goal is scored at 19:21 of the 2nd period I would win the game 7 bonus. If the game winning goal is scored at 19:11 of the 1st, or 19:33 of the 3rd, or even if it's scored at 19:00 of the 2nd OT period I would win the bonus. You do not need to predict the period, or the seconds, only the whole minute. Make sense? Good.

So, this is it! The Wings vs the Pens for the second straight year for Lord Stanley's Cup. 2 somewhat short series's completed round 3 to set up the back to back Pit vs Det Final. Round 2 Done

With the Hurricane's o.t. win tonight, along with the Wings knocking off the Ducks, the 2nd round is done. Shane has completed his worst to first run on the leaderboard after jumping from last place following the 1st round, into a 3 way tie for the lead at the conclusion of round 2 tonight. Brain, also tied for 1st place, won the round 2 Bonus by guessing the closest total amount of goals scored in the Western Conference without going over. Total goals scored were 81, Brain had picked 76.

Each series in the next round is worth more points and the leaderboard is pretty tight. Still anyone's to win!

Caps are done

The Penguins knocked off the Caps in their game 7 tonight, in fact they clobbered them 6-2! Congratulations to Shane who not only picked the Penguins to win in 7 games, but was also the only one to correctly predict that the winning team would score 6 goals in the game tonight. Shane completed the first sweep of a playoff series so far to include a game 7. With the 40 points gained he jumped from last place all the way up to 2nd just behind the current leader, Wildeman.

With 2 game 7's wrapping tomorrow, there are lots of points to be handed out. As of now there are a few people who have not entered their game 7 bonus prediction for the games tomorrow night. Get them in soon or you'll miss out on all the crazy fun/action that is yet to be had!

Ok, so after rethinking this is I have decided that my Game 7 Bonus question was not only too easy, but unfair if I wish to maintain equality throughout this "pool" sort of thing. So I am going to change it now since only Huggylicious has responded to this point.

So we could have 2 series's wrap up tonight if the Blackhawks can beat the Canucks and if the Penguins can stop the Capitals, otherwise will have 2 game 7's all set and ready to go. If the game 7's happen I will be posting the Game 7 Bonuses tonight. 2 More game 6's to go tomorrow, so we could have a bunch of bonus points up for grabs. Canes, Caps win Game 7's

Wow, what a finish to both these series!

Congratulations to Huggylicious, the only one to guess the Game 7 Bonus for the Canes vs Devils series. He took Joni Pitkanen who had only one second more ice time then the next player. Can you feel the excitement?

Round 1 ends with a 3 way tie for 1st place between Rajwinda, Red, and Huggylicious, all with 90 points. But don't worry, with each round of the playoffs correct predictions are worth increasingly more, meaning it's still anybody's game to win, even Shane's ;)

Presidents Trophy Winners Done! Flamers Out!

Oh man, there are some moments I love watching playoff hockey, but few are better than watching as the Flamers from Calgary go down in... well flames! HAHAHAHAHA

Maybe it's just me, or maybe it's the Calgary Flames fan/bar owner of the bar I just came home from, but I'm feeling pretty good tonight considering my team is nowhere to be found in the playoffs!

Combined with a San Jose (choke) first round exit at the hands of the "red hot" Anaheim Ass-Clowns, errr I mean Ducks, this sets up the 2nd round in the West as follows:

Yeah, there are few things better than a Flames loss. In fact there is nothing better than a Flames loss other than it being at the hands of the Oilers, however I will take a big Hawks win over the Flamers from Cow-Town followed by a hard fought win over the Nucks from Van-City.

Wings - 3rd team to use the brooms

Following the lead of the Canucks and Bruins, The Detroit Red Wings completed the sweep of the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight. Columbus, making their first trip to the post season in franchise history this season, failed to win a game against the defending Stanley Cup champions.

What does this mean to us? Well, the 6 way tie for the lead becomes a 5 way tie since I decided to take Columbus. What can I say, Columbus had great goaltending and Detroit didn't down the stretch. I thought the Wings were ripe for an upset. At least it shows that I'm not rigging the pool!

Habs are out!

Well the Habs take one on the chin tonight as the bastards from Boston put the brooms to Les Canadiens. I can't stand the Bruins, but what do you do.

Red's one day lead in the pool has now turned into 2nd last place only because of the other Habs fan Shane who still has yet to get a point and still occupies the bottom spot.

Will Detroit sweep tomorrow? We'll see.

Canucks Sweep Round 1

Well, well, well, for the first time in franchise history the Canucks have swept a series. I have to say I didn't think they were going to pull it off but they did and in o.t. no less.

As for the pool, the leaderboard has been updated. Congratulations to Red who has taken the first lead after selecting Vancouver to win and guessing the Bonus correctly choosing Rick Rypien to lead the Canucks in penalty minutes. He finished with 12 PIM in 4 games.

After one series being complete Red sits alone in 1st with 20 points, followed by a 6-way tie for 2nd spot all with 15 points and lastly Shane (the only one to pick the Blues to win) with 0 points alone in 8th spot. Nobody predicted a 4 game series sweep.

Things should start to get interesting as a few more playoff series are likely going to wrap up within the next few days, and remember for ALL game sevens throughout the post season there will be a "game 7 bonus" that you will need to enter no later than 2 hours prior to the start of the game. I will post the bonus question asap following game 6 and email all the participants as well.

Alright, here we go this is the first round of the playoffs, the match-ups are set, and the excitement is building! Can you feel the playoff fever?

NHL Playoff Hockey Pool 2009 - Rules

After some thought I have come up with a format for the pool. I want to make it simple for me to manage and easy for the participants as well since we all have busy lives, while still keeping it interesting.

Here are the rules:

Once the playoff match ups are set, each participant will need to submit all there picks for round 1 of the 2009 NHL Playoffs no later than 2 hours before the start of the first game. They will select a winner for each best of 7 playoff series as well as predict how many games the series will last. For example let's say this is a 1st round match up:

San Jose (1) vs Anaheim (8)
Prediction: San Jose wins series 4-2

Bonus:

Throughout the playoffs there will be a series of bonus predictions pertaining to teams, stats, players, or trivia and extra points will be awarded. For example:
How many goals will Joe Thornton score in the first round? or Who will lead in playoff scoring?

Game 7 Bonus:

For all game 7's throughout the playoffs there will be an additional game 7 bonus prediction and will be posted asap following game 6 and will close 2 hours before game 7 starts.

Scoring System:

Round 1:
Correct series winner + correct number of games played = 20 points
Correct series winner + wrong number of games played = 15 points
Wrong series winner + correct number of games played = 5 points
Wrong series winner + wrong number of games played = 0 points
Bonus = 5 points
Game 7 Bonus = 5 points

Round 2:
Correct series winner + correct number of games played = 30 points
Correct series winner + wrong number of games played = 20 points
Wrong series winner + correct number of games played = 10 points
Wrong series winner + wrong number of games played = 0 points
Bonus = 10 points
Game 7 Bonus = 10 points


Round 3 - Conference Finals:
Correct series winner + correct number of games played = 40 points
Correct series winner + wrong number of games played = 25 points
Wrong series winner + correct number of games played = 15 points

Game 7 Bonus = 15 points

Round 3 - Stanley Cup Finals:
Correct series winner + correct number of games played = 60 points
Correct series winner + wrong number of games played = 35 points

The winner will receive praise from all other participants plus their picture up in lights atop this blog through the summer until the start of the 2009/2010 NHL regular season (providing I have a picture of the winner).

Drummer John's NHL Playoff Hockey Pool 2009

Welcome to my NHL Playoff Hockey Pool blog page. I am planning on hosting a pool here for this seasons playoffs. I haven't got all the rules worked out yet, but I am working on them and will post them as soon as they are complete.

This pool will be more of a predict the score/winner/series winner sort of thing so it will be pretty simple and won't take a lot of time out of anyone's day. The idea I have is we will start with the 8 playoff match ups. Each player in the pool will make predictions at the start of each series of what team will win the series and in how many games, and maybe even the score of each game earning more points the more accurate the prediction. But as I said, I will get the rules figured out and post them soon.

This pool is open to my friends only or by invite, however if I don't get a lot of response I will allow others to join. Leave me a comment if you're interested in joining!
